TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A father plead guilty on Monday to murdering one son and trying to kill another.

Katron Walker has plead guilty to murdering his four-year-old son, Collin Walker, and for trying to kill his two-year-old son, Monte Walker. The plea agreement calls for Katron to serve between 45 to 100 years in prison.

The case dates back to 2006 when police said Walker kidnapped his two sons, stabbed them both and took them into a lake. Monte was rescued, but Collin died of a puncture wound to the heart.

Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt said it's typical to offer pleas in most cases. However, for this case, they paid close attention to the wishes of the children's family.

"It is true that I'm always going to put a lot of weight on what the people who actually suffered from the crime what their position is as far as how they'd like to see the case be resolved," Modesitt said.

The prosecutor's office points out that even if Walker did go to trial and was convicted, the maximum sentence behind bars he could get would be 115 years, which is just 15 more than the plea deal agreement.

Walker is scheduled for sentencing August 18. Walker could have faced the death penalty if his case went to trial.
