Indiana reports 3rd meningitis case tied to outbreak

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana health officials have confirmed at least three cases of fungal meningitis linked to a recalled back pain medication that's been connected with a nationwide outbreak that's left five people dead.

Indiana State Department of Health spokesman Ken Severson said Friday three cases have been confirmed, but he would not disclose further details.

OSMC Surgery Center CEO Don Hammond told The Associated Press that two of the Elkhart clinic's patients tested positive for the rare illness.

Six Indiana health facilities received batches of the medication that was recently recalled by a Massachusetts manufacturer. The affected clinics are in Evansville, Fort Wayne, Elkhart, South Bend, Terre Haute and Columbus.

The clinics are contacting more than 1,000 patients who received injections. Patients who reported possible symptoms are being told to seek medical care.
