Feds criticize Indiana program for migrant children

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The U.S. Department of Education is urging more action by Indiana officials to ensure a good education for migrant children.

A report obtained this week by The Associated Press says Indiana never spent millions of dollars it was supposed to use to help the children of migrant workers receive adequate schooling.

The report says the number of children eligible for Indiana's program has dwindled from 7,000 to 1,000 since 2007. Most migrate from southern states.

Among other things, the report says Indiana's system for finding children the program could serve has been downsized so much it can't do the job any longer.

An Indiana Department of Education spokeswoman says the agency is working with the federal government and other Midwestern states to develop a more efficient program
