UPDATE: Zaragoza found guilty of murder

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A man charged in the 2010 murder of Kory Rogers in Lafayette was found guilty Monday evening.

A jury returned a guilty verdict on all of Edward Zaragoza's charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, conspiracy to commit burglary, conspiracy to commit theft, and burglary.

Closing arguments took place late Monday morning and into the afternoon.  The jury reached a verdict shortly before 6:00 p.m.

The trial did not end there. It moved to phase two which focused on Zaragoza's previous convictions.

The jury found Zaragoza guilty of possession of a firearm by a violent felon in 2010 after a burglary conviction in 1997.

Phase three of Zaragoza's trial will take place Tuesday morning. He has waived his right to a jury. Therefore, more previous convictions will be presented to Judge Randy Williams of Superior Court I by the State.

Court documents say the Grand Jury of Tippecanoe County have sufficient cause to determine Edward Zaragoza and-or Jeremiah Thompson killed Kory Rogers, while attempting to commit burglary or robbery.

The crime happened in April 2010 when Rogers was found dead of a gunshot wound inside a house at 2200 Ottawa Drive.

Zaragoza was charged in May for conspiracy to commit robbery against Rogers.

A probable cause affidavit for a separate burglary case says Thompson is Zaragoza's brother-in-law. Thompson's jury trial will be held next month.

Rogers' murder was the first in Lafayette since 2008.
