MIAMI COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - Homicide suspect Antonio Williams attempted to kill himself on October 31 by overdosing on methadone which ultimately resulted in his death on Monday, January 16.
Originally, Williams had been prescribed methadone to help him with his long history of drug use.
According to Deputy Coroner John Boyer, Williams wrote a suicide note to a friend while incarcerated in Michigan City.
Five days after his suicide attempt, Williams was rushed to the hospital where he had a tracheal tube placed down his throat.
Williams had to spend several weeks on a ventilator which resulted in collapsed lungs. He developed pneumonia while on the ventilator. He also was diagnosed with adult respiratory distress syndrome.
Williams was rushed to the hospital on Monday for another possible collapsed lung. He was taken to Duke's Memorial Hospital in Peru from the Miami County Correctional Facility.
En route to the hospital, Williams died of cardiac arrest. Around 10:00 a.m., he was pronounced dead.
An x-ray of his chest was taken and found he did have a collapsed lung.
In July, police said the crime started with an argument between 26-year-old Jeremy Gibson and Williams in Lafayette.
Police said Gibson was beaten, then taken to a field in Tippecanoe County where he was beaten again. This time was with a pick axe and shovel, then buried in that field.
Police soon arrested Antonio Williams, Darren Englert and Carol Clear for the crime.
