LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue assistant women’s basketball coach Martin Clapp announced his resignation Friday for personal reasons, effective immediately.

According to the Tippecanoe County Jail, he was arrested early Thursday morning on a preliminary charge of Operating While Intoxicated.

A Lafayette police officer made the arrest at 6:40 a.m. Jail records indicate he was released on his own recognizance less than eight hours later at 2:20 p.m.

A release from Purdue University made no mention of the arrest, but did state the University will have no further comment on the matter.

Clapp has 30 years of coaching experience in women's basketball and spent six years as an assistant coach at Purdue.

His primary responsibilities included post-player development, recruiting, scouting, scheduling and summer camp curriculum.

Clapp's resume includes 14 years at the University of Louisville. He was head coach for six years from 1997 to 2003, co-head coach the first three seasons before taking over the reigns alone in 2000.

His overall record was 108-73 and includes a conference regular-season championship in 2001 that garnered Conference USA Coach of the Year honors.

During his tenure at Louisville the Cardinals earned six NCAA tournament berths, including three second-round appearances (1993, 1995, 1998).
