PIERCETON, Ind. (AP) - Prosecutors say a 17-year-old escaped from a juvenile detention center in northeast Indiana and shot a man who found him hiding in his car.

Authorities didn't release the victim's condition, but police told The Journal Gazette that he was expected to survive.

Police say the man was driving home from work in Pierceton about 7 a.m. Sunday when he noticed someone in the back seat. When the man turned around, police say he was shot in the chest. Authorities say the man wrestled the gun away from the teen and held him at gunpoint until police arrived.

Investigators say the teen escaped Saturday night from the Pierceton Woods detention center, which is near the victim's workplace. Police didn't how the youth obtained the gun.
