LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette police are following a few leads in last month's automated teller machine (ATM) skimming scam.
The department released a photo Friday taken from a local ATM, that shows a man holding up a device. The device is an ATM skimmer, used to steal customers' debit card information, Lafayette Police Detective B.T. Brown said.
Police have not yet identified the suspect and are asking for help from the community, Brown said. It appear that whoever it was has probably left the area, he added.
"I don't know if they'll come back to Lafayette," he said. "It's certainly possible. Do I know of any plans for them to target Lafayette again? No, I don't."
Still, Brown said, it is important to remain alert when you make a stop at the ATM.
"Certainly one of the things to look for is pieces that are out of place around the area where you put your card in," he said. "Make sure it doesn't look loose. Look for things that are simply out of place. Maybe an extra piece of plastic. Maybe an external speaker."
If you recognize the man in the photo, or have any information about the ATM skimming scam, you're asked to call the Lafayette Police Department at (765) 807-1200.
