EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Police in Evansville have arrested a man who they say attacked his girlfriend's dog with an ax, severely injuring the animal.
WFIE-TV reports the pit bull survived and was treated at an emergency veterinary clinic.
A Vanderburgh County jail officer said 33-year-old Michael A. Hughes was being held there on $50,000 bond Tuesday. He faces preliminary charges of animal cruelty and resisting law enforcement. A court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports Hughes' girlfriend told police he attacked the dog with an ax Sunday night, wounding it on the head, legs and back. Neighbors tell WFIE they heard the dog squealing.
Police say Hughes locked himself in a bedroom and fought the officers who arrested him.
