DARLINGTON, Ind. (WLFI) - Indiana State Police along with two county sheriff's offices are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Monday night in Montgomery County.
One man is dead and another man is in custody in the Montgomery County Jail on a warrant for murder.
Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a report of a person being beaten with a gun at 9:22 p.m. Monday at a residence located at 2604 N. County Road 950 East near Darlington.
Upon arrival, deputies found 51-year-old Mark J. Welch lying unresponsive on the ground, and it was discovered Welch had a gunshot wound.
Witnesses say a second person fled from the home in a pickup truck, possibly heading to 5680 N. County Road 901 East in Brownsburg.
Indiana State Police troopers stepped in and helped execute a search warrant at that second address in question.
Hendricks County Sheriff's Office was pulled in and warned that the second subject who had fled the scene was possibly armed.
At 4:30 Tuesday morning, troopers and the Hendricks County Sheriff's Office arrested 39-year-old Matthew Eric Hickman, who lives at the home in Brownsburg.
Hickman was taken without incident to the Montgomery County Jail on a warrant for murder and aggravated battery.
Hickman is on a no-bond order and the investigation into the murder continues.
An autopsy will be performed on Welch Tuesday or Wednesday.
