Man shot by South Bend police convicted on charges

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A man shot numerous times by South Bend police officers has been convicted on resisting arrest and drug possession charges.
A St. Joseph County jury reached the verdicts Thursday against 38-year-old Joseph Stambaugh. Police say Stambaugh was fleeing from officers in May when he crashed head-on into a squad car, then backed into another one before officers shot him.
The South Bend Tribune reports Stambaugh sat in a wheelchair with both hands still in casts during his trial six months after the confrontation.
His defense attorney argued that the amount of cocaine and marijuana found in Stambaugh's car were so small he likely didn't know about it and was fleeing because his driver's license was suspended.
Stambaugh faces sentencing on Nov. 28.
