LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - The Lafayette Police Department (LPD) will get a new K9 officer thanks to a Super Bowl Champion quarterback. Pittsburgh Steeler Ben Rothlisberger is giving the department a grant from his foundation to purchase a fifth dog.

The K9 will be trained for patrol and tracking purposes. Another K9 will ensure all shifts have a dog available.

"We would like to have better coverage, because in a large city, as we are in Lafayette, the need grows for K9 service more frequently,” said Lafayette Police Chief Don Roush.

The Ben Roethlisberger Foundation distributes grants to police departments in surrounding communities of each regular season away game for the 2011 season. The Steelers will play the Colts in Indy on September 25, 2011.
