LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette police said reports of a stabbing and a robbery Tuesday evening are connected, but only one actually happened.
Officers responded to the area near 18th and Kossuth around 7:45 p.m. after a woman reported she was walking with a friend when a car pulled up, some people jumped out and stabbed her.
A few minutes earlier, officers got a report of a robbery near the intersection of Jackson and Lincoln about a half mile away from a different woman who said she was walking with a friend when a car pulled up, some people jumped out and robbed her.
Police are trying to unravel what exactly happened. But the stabbing victim has accused the robbery victim of being the suspect in her crime and the robbery victim has accused the stabbing victim of being the suspect in her crime.
"Nobody else was ever in danger," said Sgt. Perry Amos with Lafayette police. "There were no reports of anyone else being threatened or in danger from this. We are just trying to clarify between the two victims, of the robbery and the stabbing, what exactly happened and who is responsible."
Police say the stabbing victim had superficial wounds to her arm and leg and knows the robbery victim.
Sgt. Amos told News 18 evidence late Tuesday appears to back up the story of the robbery, but officers believe the stabbing report is false.
Investigators were still questioning both women at the police station late Tuesday night.
