Sheriff's Department believes suspect was on foot

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Police continue to search for a suspect in Saturday night's shooting at the Stone Crossing Subdivison.

Sheriff Tracy Brown said several shots were fired into a house at 3936 Spinel Street just after 10:00 p.m. Saturday.  He said one person was home at the time of the shooting and was not injured.

Initially neighbors reported that a silver or blue 2010 Camaro left the scene after the shots were fired.  But investigators now believe the suspect or suspects were on foot.

"It's not consistent with a drive-by shooting.  We're kind of thinking at this point that is was possibly an individual who was out on foot in front of the residence," said McGrew.

Several rounds were fired into the front door and window.  Lieutenant Daniel McGrew with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department said police believe 3936 Spinel Street was specifically targeted.

"We do think this is a particular isolated incident at that single residence.  It's going to be solved, just a matter of time until we get the inside information on what's transpired here that's caused this individual to be targeted," said Daniel McGrew.

Even so, neighbors worry that shots could be fired in such a quiet neighborhood with so many kids around.

"We feel like we live in a safe neighborhood.  We have all the kids come down to our street to play because we live right on the end and all the kids are down there.  It's scary to see a bunch of cop cars come in," said Megan Long.

Larry Arel said he got worried after his house in the country was broken into. So, he moved into the Stone Crossing Subdivision in hopes of keeping his family safe.

"It's very concerning, especially when my 5- and 6-year-olds are outside playing all day after school, every day of the week.  There's a lot of kids in the neighborhood," said Arel.

Lieutenant McGrew said for those who are worried, there are steps they can take to help protect themselves.

"Keep a visual on your neighbors and your neighbors houses.  Know the people around you.  Communicate with your neighbors is the main thing.  A neighborhood watch type thing.  Just keep yourselves informed," said McGrew.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to contact the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department at 423-9388 or the anonymous We Tip Hotline at 1-800-78-CRIME.
