Murder lawyer to defend robbery suspect

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A Mooresville man in jail on robbery charges is being represented by a man who served as defense attorney in a well-known Indiana University murder case.

Edward Zaragoza is currently in jail on charges for conspiracy to commit robbery. The choice of representation is significant because the probable cause affidavit in that case connects Zaragoza to two other men suspected in the April 8 murder of Lafayette resident Kory Rogers.

According to court records, Zaragoza is being represented by Patrick Baker, the same man who defended John Myers in 2006 in the murder case of Indiana University student Jill Behrman.

Baker's representation of Myers in the Behrman case has raised its own questions.

News Channel 18 obtained documents from the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission that detail an investigation into Baker's practices during the Behrman case. According to the documents, Baker allegedly violated professional conduct in several ways, including visiting Myers in jail to offer to represent him, making false assertions in his opening arguments that weren't backed up by evidence, and asking Myers' family for money for services when Myers was eligible for help from the county.
