LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Two Lafayette banks and a Lafayette home were searched Monday as part of a massive raid of more than a dozen businesses across the state.

State excise police have arrested 36 people after an 18-month investigation into what's being called one of the state's largest identity theft rings.

Officers had search warrants for 13 businesses and four homes in eight cities across Indiana, including two unnamed banks and one undisclosed residence in Lafayette.  In all, they have seized more than $1.6 million.

"State excise police officers are looking for evidence of corrupt business influence, money laundering, theft,  forgery, perjury and a number of other related charges," said Corp. Travis Thickstun with Indiana State Excise Police.

Thickstun said excise officers know of more than 100 people who fraudulently used or stole someone else's social security number.
