MISHAWAKA, Ind. (AP) - A former employee of a northern Indiana township trustee's office won't have to spend time in jail for accepting nearly $40,000 for work she never did.
A St. Joseph County magistrate ordered 30-year-old Sarah Sharp of Mishawaka (mish-ah-WAH'-kuh) on Wednesday to spend 45 days on home detention and to reimburse the township. The South Bend Tribune reports Sharp pleaded guilty last month to felony charges of ghost employment and conflict of interest.
Prosecutors say Sharp was the live-in girlfriend of then-Penn Township trustee Jeff Dean, who paid her in 2008 and 2009 for cleaning work and didn't document the payments.
Dean pleaded guilty to official misconduct charges in May and resigned as trustee for the township that includes Mishawaka. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail.
