Indiana board revokes Bloomington pain doc's license

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Medical Licensing Board has revoked the medical license of Bloomington pain-clinic physician Dr. Kamal Tiwari.

The board on Thursday also ordered Tiwari to pay the maximum fine of $22,000 within 180 days.

The Indiana attorney general's office says Tiwari was sentenced last month to 3½ years in federal prison for prescribing addictive painkillers to known substance abusers and committing health care fraud by seeking Medicaid reimbursement for medically unnecessary procedures. Tiwari also faces three years on supervised release and nearly $1.3 million in restitution to Medicare, Medicaid and an insurance company.

The attorney general's office filed an administrative complaint against Tiwari in April 2010 at the same time that the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency rescinded his ability to prescribe controlled substances.
