Former youth minister pleads guilty to fraud, laundering charges

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - A former area youth minister pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering charges.
Back in March, Michael Plake, the youth minister at the St. Thomas Aquinas the Catholic Center at Purdue, and Paul Cardwell, the former head of the White County Memorial Hospital, were charged with 15 federal charges.
Investigators said in seven months, the pair used a fraudulent billing scheme to get almost $850,000 from a Wyoming health care business that Cardwell served as CEO. Cardwell became a federal fugitive last month.
This week, Plake entered into an agreement in which he pleaded guilty to two of the 15 counts he faced. Sentencing is set for Nov. 26 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
St. Thomas Aquinas officials told News 18 Plake resigned his youth minister position soon after the charges were filed.
