SHELBYVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for causing the death of his girlfriend's 22-month-old son.
A Shelby County judge ordered the sentence on Thursday for Nathan Barker of Shelbyville. Baker pleaded guilty in September to a felony charge of battery resulting in death.
The Shelbyville News reports prosecutors accused Barker of shaking and beating Jasper Simpson before the boy's August 2011 death. Authorities say Barker told live-in girlfriend Amanda Simpson that Jasper had fallen from a couch and that medics had said he was fine, but medics had never been called.
Doctors found Jasper suffered bleeding in the brain, damaged organs and internal bleeding. Judge Charles O'Connor told Barker he didn't think there were words to describe Jasper's injuries.
