Employees prevent possible bank robbery

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) The Fort Wayne Police Department is looking for two suspects after an attempted bank robbery on Wednesday.

Police said they responded to calls of a bank robbery around 10:43 a.m. at Freedom Financial Credit Union at 1802 Inwood Dr.

Employees told police that two men, one armed with a gun, were seen outside near the bank.

The employees said they immediately activated security measures, including locking the bank's lobby doors. The suspects could not get into the bank and were seen leaving on foot into a residential area.

Police tracked a trail with K9 officers but lost the scent.

Police ask that anyone with information about the incident is asked to call police or Crime Stoppers at (260) 436-STOP (7867). 

This incident remains under investigation by the Northeast Indiana Bank Robbery Task Force.  This task force is composed of investigators with the City of Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Sheriff Department, Indiana State Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Past Robbery Attempts

This is the fourth time Freedom Financial has been targeted by robbers in the last two years, according to police.

In an incident in August 2012, an employee of the credit union was approached by two men at her home, held captive and forced inside the bank to get cash for the suspects.

In April 2012, a man came up behind a woman and forced her inside the bank. Police said the man was upset that no cash was available and struck the woman in the head several times with a hard object. The woman was taken to the hospital in fair condition.

In December of 2011, three men robbed the credit union at gunpoint and demanded cash. All three fled the bank with some cash. No customers were in the bank at the time and no one was hurt.

In November of 2011 , a man stopped a robbery attempt and helped police locate the suspect after he fled the scene. The man didn't get away with anything and was later located by police and arrested.
