C. Indiana town plagued by mailbox explosions

WESTFIELD, Ind. (AP) - Police in a central Indiana town are investigating a series of small explosions that have destroyed mailboxes and left some residents on edge.

Westfield police say four mailbox explosions have been reported since Friday in the Hamilton County town, but no one has been injured.

Sgt. Robert Dine tells The Indianapolis Star that the blasts were caused by two-liter plastic soda bottles filled with a household cleaner and aluminum foil. A chemical reaction from that mixture creates growing pressure in the capped bottles, causing them to eventually explode.

Police are warning residents not to touch any bottles filled with unknown fluids or objects.

Dine says descriptions of how to make the soda bottle bombs can be found on the Internet.
