2 students start electric car business

BOONE COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - How much ambition did you have as a college student? Were you ready to start a company?

Two Purdue University engineer students say they are and already did.

Students Drew Westrick and Grant Chapman and a few friends created E-V-C Racing.

They've done enough to earn an invitation to Canada, to the Vancouver Auto Show.

The duo will show the electric go-karts they design and hope to sell them.

The potential is even greater.

“"What we're trying to do here is push the current technology to its limits,” Chapman said. “Find (those limits) and maybe go a little bit past."

"So, hopefully, the technology we build will be in your car 10, 20 years from now,” he added.

The young men said they're trying to buy from Indiana suppliers whenever possible - from the batteries to the kart chassis'. They have created a kart that can reach a top speed of about 75 mph and a battery that will last 15 miles during a race.
