STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (WLFI) - Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and Penn State University President Graham Spanier have been fired Wednesday night by the school's board of trustees.
The board of trustees held an emergency meeting Wednesday evening in the midst of child sex abuse charges brought against former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky.
Paterno had earlier Wednesday issued a statement announcing his retirement effective at the end of the season but the board of trustees obviously didn't agree with Paterno's decision.
Paterno hasn't been accused of legal wrongdoing but has been severely criticized by many for not doing more to stop Sandusky.
Paterno had been the Nittany Lions head football coach since 1966.
