Federal judge dismisses suit against jail

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - A federal judge has dismissed a lawsuit that accused the Porter County Jail of exposing inmates to "inhumane conditions."

U.S. District Court Judge Theresa Springmann in Fort Wayne ordered the case dismissed this week after a previous order mailed to the inmate who sued the northern Indiana jail was returned as undeliverable.

The Times of Munster reports Springmann said it was inmate Jermone Scott's responsibility to make sure the court knew how to contact him. The judge said Scott can refile the suit at a later date.

His suit claims he was forced to endure "inhumane conditions of confinement" that include poor food and lack of exercise. It alleged the jail's cells are so overcrowded it's difficult to use the bathroom for fear of urinating on another inmate.
