GARY, Ind. (AP) - A northwestern Indiana woman says a house fire that killed several champion show dogs has left her daughter devastated.

Vee Gallagher says her 42-year-old daughter had gone to see a friend for a couple of hours Monday in a nearby town. While her daughter, Kandi Sickles, was gone, a neighbor spotted heavy smoke and flames coming from the side of her house in Lake County's Calumet Township.

The fire killed between eight and 10 of the Shetland sheepdogs and Chinese crested dogs Sickles owned.

Gallagher tells The Times of Munster (http://bit.ly/We6s5R ) that her daughter lost everything in the fire and that "those dogs were her kids."

The cause of Monday's fire remains under investigation.
