WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia officials are unveiling a new affordable and energy efficient home.

District officials plan to show off the new Empowerhouse Tuesday morning in the city's Deanwood neighborhood. Housing officials say the home consumes 90 percent less energy than a typical home.

The house was designed and constructed by students for Department of Energy's Solar Decathlon competition, where it took top honors in the affordability category. The house designed by students at Parsons, the New School and Stevens Institute of Technology was later moved to Deanwood and expanded into a two-family home.

Housing officials say the Empowerhouse team took the competition beyond the Mall, by designing and constructing the house for a specific site in the Deanwood neighborhood.
