GREENE COUNTY, Ind. (WLFI) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (D.N.R.) has proof a mountain lion is roaming in the wild in rural Greene County in southwestern Indiana.
According to a new release from the D.N.R., Biologist Scott Johnson investigated reports from a local resident and found signs of a mountain lion east of the town of Bloomfield.
He placed trail cameras near an area where he found a deer carcass covered in leaves, and just a day later had several pictures of the animal.
The D.N.R. said without more evidence it would be hard to determine if the mountain lion was wild or had escaped from captivity.
Conservation officers have been working with residents in Greene County to keep them informed of the cougar's presence.
This is the first confirmed presence of a mountain lion in the wild since the D.N.R.'s new policy to investigate sightings was implemented in March, 2010.
The D.N.R. said there have been 19 sightings reported throughout the state since March.
