School uses solar-powered heating system

COLUMBUS, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana elementary school is turning to the sun to heat its water supply and also hold down its utility bills.
Mt. Healthy Elementary School in Columbus has been fitted with six solar panels that can produce enough heat to warm 480 gallons of water to 120 degrees on sunny days.
Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. energy manager Charlie McCoy tells The Republic that on cloudy days the school's general electrical system can make up the heating difference.
The new solar water heating system was purchased and installed with a $67,000 grant from Hoosier Energy Rural Cooperative Inc.
The system is expected to save the school district hundreds of dollars a week. And students will be able to track the solar heating system's energy production online.
