WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Students with the Boiler Green Initiative are proving that you can live green at any altitude by designing the first green roof on campus on top of Schleman Hall of Student Services.

President Ryan Cambridge says the roof will capture rain water and purify it using a small plant garden.
It will also reflect heat from the sun.

"We're using ADA compliant reflective pavers that when the sun hits these pavers, it's reflected back into the atmosphere," Cambridge said "That way the building is able to heat and cool itself more efficiently."

Those associated with the project hope that it will accomplish many goals. First, they hope it will directly help the environment. Second, they hope that it will give the students involved valuable experience with "green" construction. Third, they hope that it will improve the campus's image to both new and prospective students, and maybe even become a great place to study or hang out to chat or picnic.

The group hopes to complete the green roof close to Earth Day in April. The $68,000 project is funded by the State Farm Youth Advisory Board.
