LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Things along Twyckenham Boulevard have gotten a little shady.

Tree Lafayette and Lafayette Parks and Recreation Department hosted a tree planting ceremony to honor Arbor Day.

Mayor Tony Roswarski was presented Lafayette's 17th consecutive Tree City USA Award from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Division of Forestry.

More than 100 volunteers, including a crew from NewsChannel 18, planted 66 trees.

Tree Lafayette President Larry Rose said the trees will offer many things to the city.

"More people are walking and the trees provide shade which gives you UV protection for the skin. It filters the air. It takes 7 trees per person to breathe air. Things we don't normally think about because air is free," Rose said.

Tree Lafayette planted their 1000th tree at the event.

Next year's Arbor Day celebration will have volunteers plant trees along Creasy Lane.
