LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - TreeLafayette is looking for volunteers to assist in planting trees on Arbor Day. Arbor Day is this Saturday, May 9.
Volunteers will be meeting on Twyckenham Boulevard in the Soller-Baker Funeral Home parking lot at 9:00 a.m. to hear Mayor Roswarski read an Arbor Day proclamation and to see Lafayette receive the Tree City USA award. Tree planting will begin at around 10:00 a.m. and will likely continue until around noon.
Holes have been dug in advance by the Lafayette Park Department. Volunteers will roll in the tree, remove the burlap, and fill in the hole with soil and water. Each team will plant three to four trees.
TreeLafayette will provide the trees, mulch, and water. They ask that each individual bring gloves. Each team should make an effort to bring a box knife or wire cutter, two rakes, and two shovels, but TreeLafayette will provide these items if teams are unable to bring them.
Teams, families, or individuals should contact Larry Rose at larry@treelafayette.org to sign up. Three or four people is a good size for a team.
The first 100 volunteers to register will get a t-shirt that reads: “I helped plant 1000 trees.” Each volunteer will receive a 3 foot red oak tree to take home.
