LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette is a little greener this weekend, after dozens of volunteers came out to help the group Tree Lafayette celebrate Arbor Day.
The group met at the Menard's Store on Creasy Lane to plant trees along the street.
Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski read a proclamation for the holiday, and accepted recognition from the Tree City U.S.A. program for the 18th year in a row.
Then the fun part began. Even News Channel 18 had a team out there, digging holes for a green addition to the community.
People of all ages helped in any way they could.
"It's because they grow and then you get to have them," said Cumberland Elementary student Kaia Hood, when asked why it's important to plant trees.
"Yeah, cause they give us fresh oxygen and they eat the bad stuff in the air," added Lauren Kish, a classmate of Hood's.
All the people who came out to plant got to take home a free sapling to plant in their own yards.
