Judge says tree cutting at Dunes can continue

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A federal judge has given the National Park Service the go-ahead to cut trees in a bog at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
U.S. District Judge Joseph Van Bokkelen in Hammond denied a request for a temporary restraining order from Dune Acres residents Wednesday.
The Chesterton Tribune reports Van Bokkelen ruled that the attorney for the Coalition to Protect Cowles Bog Area didn't meet the legal requirements for the motion.
A group of Dune Acres residents objected when the Park Service began cutting about 3,400 trees in Cowles Bog to restore it to the condition it was in when ecologist Henry Cowles studied it in the early 20th century.
Residents claimed the Park Service disregarded public concerns about the effect of the cutting.
