Indy power company to install chargers for fleet

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indianapolis power company will install 26 charging stations at three locations to accommodate the city's plan to transition to electric/hybrid plug-in vehicles for non-emergency use.
Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Indianapolis Power & Light Co. announced the partnership Monday. The charging stations will be installed at the City-County Building and at sites on the north and south sides.
Ballard signed an executive order in December requiring the city to replace nearly 500 non-police sedans with electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.
By charging the vehicles during off-peak times, the city estimates its employees will be able to drive the new vehicles about 100 miles for about $1.
A Department of Energy grant will cover part of the estimated cost of $120,000 to $150,000 to purchase and install the chargers.
