Head to Indianapolis Zoo for Power Recycling Weekend

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - How much is 19,000 pounds? It’s more than the combined weight of the Indianapolis Zoo’s three white rhinos. It’s approximately the amount of food that Aurora, the Zoo’s walrus, consumes in a year. It’s nearly twice the weight of Sophi, the largest African elephant at the Zoo.

And it’s also the total amount of recyclables collected this past spring during the Zoo’s semi-annual Power Recycling Weekend presented by Brightpoint, Inc.

Once again the public is invited to eliminate clutter in an environmentally responsible way during the second event of the year, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday in the Zoo parking lot.

Most electronics — including microwaves, cell phones and computers — will be accepted during this event.

However, large appliances, like refrigerators, washers, dryers and air conditioners, will not be accepted.

Yellow Pages has returned to provide phone book recycling and document shredding will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days.

The following are examples of what can be recycled during the Zoo’s Power Recycling Weekend:

Telephone systems

Cellular phones

Computers and components

Monitors (no bare CRT tubes)

Scanners and copiers

Printers

Fax machines

Backup power systems

External hard drives

Satellite components

Ink and toner cartridges

Keyboards

Microwaves

Televisions

Cables and wiring

Electronic motors

Metals

Integrated circuits

Microphones

Laserdisc players

VCR/DVD players

Video game systems

Surge protectors

Palm pilots/PDAs

Power cables and supplies

Office paper

Phone books
