EPA awards $351K to clean water in Gary park

GARY, Ind. (AP) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $351,000 grant to northwest Indiana to help clean up the lagoons in Gary's Marquette Park.

The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune of Merrillville report the money will be used to develop green storm water management practices at the park near Lake Michigan. The money is in addition to a $1 million dredging project by the EPA to remove decades of sediment from the park.

Officials say the work will improve the water quality in the lagoons while reducing erosion. It also will reduce the amount of storm water going into the city's sewer system.

The money comes from the EPA's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. Work is scheduled to begin in the spring.
