DNR bans fishing near new sea lamprey barrier

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) - The state Department of Natural Resources has banned fishing near a new sea lamprey barrier in northern Indiana to protect migrating trout and salmon.

The barrier was built to prevent invasive sea lampreys from reaching spawning grounds near Michigan City. The rule that went into effect Friday prohibits the taking or possession of fish within 100 feet upstream of the barrier and from the barrier downstream to the Pottawatomie Country Club Golf Course property line.

The DNR says the rule was needed because as migrating fish approach the barrier, they gather in large concentrations. The DNR says that makes the fish vulnerable to illegal snagging and other means of poaching.

The emergency rule can remain in effect for up to one year.
