LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Tippecanoe County officials are taking more steps in the event the Wildcat Creek Solid Waste District is no more. Commissioners discussed moving money over from the Economic Development Income Tax (EDIT) fund so it has cash to pay for hazardous waste disposal.
Last month, all three commissioners decided it was time to cut ties with the district. That means the county will end its partnership with Clinton County at the Wildcat Creek Solid Waste District.
Commissioners moved money from the EDIT fund to make sure taxpayers can still dispose of hazardous waste should the county break from the district.
"In case we do dissolve, we will need some upfront to be able to run this facility," said Commissioners' President David Byers. "That is pretty much what we are doing, taking it out of the EDIT. If the district does dissolve, the assets will be divided back up. Our side of the coin, we will be getting $200,000 or $300,000 back. We will then use that to maintain our hazardous waste collection and pay back the EDIT for anything we might use."
Southside Landfill Inc has offered up a contract to do the same thing as the district. The company handles the county's trash transfer station next to the Wildcat Creek Solid Waste District office.
