LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette city officials are asking residents to lend out a helping hand during the drought and help water trees.

"Tree Lafayette" and city officials are reminding everyone trees continue to have a hard time with the drought.

The organization spent hundreds of hours this summer watering more than one thousand city trees to keep them healthy and alive.

Tulip, sycamore, Linden and crab apple trees are among the few tree varieties most at risk.

City council members are now asking the rest of the city and area residents to help pitch in and save the trees.

"We've planted a huge number of trees," Lafayette City Council Member, Ron Campbell said. "Particularly, Tree Lafayette has put in a huge number of trees in and they've got a group going around and watering those trees but they're just being worn to a frazzle."

"Tree Lafayette" says watering your trees now could save you big money in the future.
