WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Purdue Convocations is teaming up with the Sydney Opera House. On Thursday, February 4, Purdue Convocations will once again welcome the Kronos Quartet.
The string ensemble will perform composer Jon Rose's "Music from Fences." This is a co-commission between Purdue Convocations and Sydney Opera House. Purdue Convocations Director Todd Wetzel said musicians will play on a special amplified fence wire instrument created by Rose.
"He originally wrote this for music to be played on a fence but obviously the practical considerations of, how do you take a fence on tour, meant that they created these instruments that use fence wire. So, the Kronos Quartet plays on these fence-like instruments," Wetzel said.
He said the set designer Willie Williams, also designed for Lady Gaga and U2's recent tours.
"Specifically what happens in "Music from Fences" is there are video cameras attached to the fence wire so the projection environment that happens in this new commissioned work (is that) you'll be looking down the fence wires seeing this beautiful imagery of these vibrating strings and the playing while the work is being performed. So it's a fascinating contemporary piece," Wetzel said.
