LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - In this week's Helen segment, we'll introduce you to the woman at the helm of the Tippecanoe Art Federation, Tetia Lee. The Chicago-native is promoting the arts to younger generations, and changing lives, one paintbrush at a time.
"If it weren't for the arts, I probably wouldn't be here today, literally in this position. Just because it is very easy to get into trouble, especially growing up in a large city like I did," Lee said.
Lee took over TAF in January 2008. Since then, she has made education, a priority. One of TAF's program she is most proud of, is the Mural Art Initiative. At-risk youth work along-side local artists covering the graffiti around town. She said it teaches kids the value of art and respecting their community.
"The initiative is hopefully going to be throughout our entire region but first, starting here at home," Lee said.
In late August, an after-school art program was launched to gives kids a safe place to hang out and learn more about the arts. She said exposing kids to the arts is critical.
"A lot of schools, they cut back on the arts when we are in budget restraints like we are now," Lee said.
She said she is proud of her work and thankful to live in the Lafayette community.
"This is the first community I've lived in 10 years that has had
a vibrant downtown and is thriving and there is just such a great
energy here. It's a very competitive field, again I feel very lucky
and very fortunate to be in the position I am. But it is that
dedication I've had, from a very young age," Lee said.
