LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Cancer can take a toll on a patient and their family. In this week's Helen Magazine segment, we introduce you to a woman who is helping people navigate through a challenging and often frightening journey.
"We provide assistance really if someone calls and needs
something we try to find resources to meet whatever their needs
are," Bond said.
The Community Cancer network has only been around for two
years but in that time, Patient Advocate, Melinda Bond, has helped
over 500 people in need. Throughout 12 counties, the CCN provides
free transportation, access to wheelchairs, prescription
assistance, and a even, a food pantry to those in need.
"I feel so blessed to have this job because there are so many people who really need help and we're able to provide that," Bond said.
Bond, a 16-year cancer survivor said one of the things she is most proud of is the CCN's Cancer Support Group. Patients and their loved ones meet the 2nd Tuesday of every month at the Unity Healthcare Conference Room.
"They really welcome new people when they come in make them feel, because you know it is intimidating to walk into a big group when you don't know anybody and you are already struggling with, 'Oh my gosh, I have cancer,' Bond said.
She said there are plenty of tears but there are also, moments of joy.
"They do a lot of laughing in there as well , it just really good, a really positive group," Bond said.
Whether it's tears or laughter, Bond will be there lending a smile or a shoulder to lean on.
