Sandy's sweet success

The sweet aromas of Sandy Smith's Peanut Brittle hang in the air....or is that the fudge or maybe the popcorn balls? Sandy Smith is
the woman behind the decadent delights.

"Mostly I hear, it's the best they've ever tasted and sometimes I hear they don't want to buy it because they open the bag and eat the whole thing," Sandy Smith said.

"I started out doing it for family and friends and someone said, "You really need to sell this." So, I searched for a kitchen," Smith said.

Smith found a brief home at the YWCA but after meeting glass jewelry maker Linda Elmore, decided to get a storefront on Main Street.

"I had no aspiration of doing peanut brittle. Period. But I just started doing it and people liked it so much and I was encouraged to sell it," she said.

Her business has since expanded beyond the brittle with fudge, candy bar pizza: Her latest venture: ice cream balls.

"It's a little ice cream ball and it's got fudge in the center and it's the fudge that I sell and then it is rolled in peanut brittle crumbs," she said.

Smith said with every new creation comes a series to tests to get it just right. As for who does the taste-testing she admits:

"I do. And Linda gets to every once in a while but I do taste every batch which is kind of bad sometimes," she said.

Smith said the greatest thing about her product and the other artist's work featured in the story is its uniqueness.

"Everything in our shop is local and it is handmade," Smith said.
