Students should consider crime rates in spring break vacation spots

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - Spring Break at the resort could be a blast, but you could also find yourself in a dangerous or unwanted situation.

Students need to consider the growing threats of drug-related violence and crime in many top vacation destinations. When Vanessa McLeod, a freshman in the College of Health and Human Sciences, took a family vacation to Jamaica three years ago, she noticed a sharp contrast when her family ventured beyond their hotel to visit a museum in the city of Kingston.

“The streets changed from paved to dirt. There were less shops,” McLeod said. “We knew that we were going into a dangerous town.”
