Sci-fi thriller impresses viewers

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - Sci-fi films aren’t exactly my favorite genre. They can be good, but are almost never great.

There’s usually something about them that feels too foreign and strange. Part of what makes the new Rian Johnson (“Brick,” “The Brothers Bloom”) movie, “Looper,” so great is that it takes an unrealistic plot and puts it in a very real-feeling environment. It’s a blockbuster film without the budget or an over used action-filled plot.

In the film, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Joe, a man in his late 20s living in 2047. Joe is a “looper,” a sort of specialized assassin whose job is to kill criminals sent back from the future by mob bosses to dispose of the bodies. The loopers’ lives consist mostly of partying and killing. They are given a time and place to be ready with a blunderbuss to kill the target sent through time.
