Many international students utilize English names

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - Though a few international students keep their birth names, many adopt English names so they won't have to deal with Americans mispronouncing their birth names.

A Chinese student whose friends at Purdue know her as "Apple" had help deciding on an English name from her teacher back home.

Minwen Wang, a freshman in the College of Science, is an international student who credits a teacher back home with helping her to select her nickname.

"When Chinese students are young, their first English teacher will help them pick their English name," Wang said. "My English teacher knew that apples are my favorite fruit, so she picked Apple as my name."
