Major University contributor and trustee retires due to sickness

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - Purdue Board of Trustee member, Michael J. Birck, has been diagnosed with leukemia and will retire from the company he co-founded – Tellabs Inc.

Birck's position on the board began in 1999 and continues through June of 2015. There is no word on if he will leave the board early or not.

Birck has started chemotherapy for chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, which is a treatable form of the bone marrow disease, but not curable.
