First-year students encounter college lifestyle

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - Many of Purdue’s 6,291 first year students are experiencing the reality of buying milk for their own cereal for the first time.

Most new students are transitioning to the college lifestyle while living on campus in the University residences.

The dorms, promoted as offering a social, academic community, use programs designed to help newly independent students.

Erin Roszczyk, a graduate student and staff resident at Harrison Hall, said one goal of the halls is to help new students adjust using resident assistants.

“Sometimes one of the hardest things to do on a campus of 40,000 is to meet people,” Roszczyk said. “The transition process is different for everybody, and we use programming to meet the various needs of everybody.”
