WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (Exponent) - Student patrol members will assume the role of pedestrian safety advocates next week to better ensure you “don’t become a speed bump.”

The patrol members will take the place of pedestrian safety advocates, better known as crossing guards in previous years. Capt. Eric Chin of the Purdue Police Department said the intention of the program is to increase safety awareness for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.

“The current trend that we have been seeing has been issues at the crosswalks. It has just been pedestrians crossing when distracted, they’re crossing between vehicles and stepping out into traffic,” Chin said. “People just step off the curb without looking.”
